Buying Advice
To make sure that you get good value for your money (whichever VW Camper) you choose, it’s important to do some meticulous inspections.
Look for the rust, as this is the most time-consuming and costly in repairs. Specifically check for rust on the following:
- chassis box
- sills
- roof guttering
- front panel edges at window bottoms
- rear bottom corners
- front valence
- wheel arches (front and rear)
- behind front seats
- under carpets/rubber mats
Also, inspect the van for any ripples, or any sign of major repairs or fillers due to previous damage. Take care when considering lowered vans, because you can never be too sure if you’re safe once the suspension is adjusted, it also makes it harder to get underneath for repairs.
When it comes to the engine, check for leaks, oil in the compartment, and make sure the engine doesn’t blow smoke. Inspect broken controls and heaters, and look out for petrol tank leaks, which mean the breather pipes need renovation. Lastly, check if the steering box is completely adjusted, and if there’s disproportionate play at the wheel.
